The Benefits of Open Innovation

Here at Huge Robot, we believe that VR/AR and other 3D display, 3D input paradigms will be the next and final iteration of computing. It will be a form of technology that massively and vitally impacts how humans will communicate and interact with each other, as well as how we experience and extend the world around us.

As pioneers in this nascent field, we have a huge ability to impact upon the curve of that growth - helping to set the foundations for the ideas that will build our future.

As a result, the responsibility is on us to ensure that the medium grows without the impediment of unnecessary barriers, and to push them back where we can.

Working with HUGE ROBOT means that our partners will have to be amenable to such a philosophy of development. The ideas that HUGE ROBOT provides will remain free to help assist the broader development community in pushing forth the state of understanding and functionality in VR and AR mediums.

Nonetheless, the benefits of leading the curve and been the forerunner in bringing the ideas that will be seen as the standard of the medium in the future will provide a significant advantage to the game, application and brand associated with those ideas.

HUGE ROBOT is currently a solo operation, run by George Kong in Perth, Western Australia.

I've been awaiting the return of VR for a long time and was among the first to kickstart the Oculus Rift back in 2012.

Virtual (and Augmented) Reality once mature will be the final computing paradigm for human beings. As 3D creatures operating in 3D space - the natural conclusion to computing is a 3D display with a 3D interface - which will reduce and remove artificial barriers to the access of information and experiences made possible by the continuing global information revolution. 

I'm a designer and 3D modeller by trade, having worked on a variety of projects including interior, product and graphic design. I also have a life long interest in technology, computer and video gaming, philosophy, as well as psychological sciences especially in the perceptual, cognitive and neuroscience domains.

These wide spread but cohesive set of interests have ideally equipped me to be innovating in the nascent medium of Virtual Reality, helping to push forward the boundaries of possibilities.

Additionally, prior to this, I was writing a book on 'The Future of Virtual Reality', which I took a break from to learn how to program and develop using Unreal Engine 4. This break from writing became extended as I found myself with a knack for coding and development, allowing me to experiment with VR development directly, rather than merely talking about it from the sidelines.

Drawing from my background knowledge and an enthusiasm for experimentation and observation, I came up with 'CAOTS' (Controller Assisted On The Spot Locomotion) the foundation of the 'Freedom Locomotion System'.

With insights from the broader VR industry continuing to flow at a steady pace, I used the information and knowledge gleaned from other developers to help inform my own understanding of what was required for a full service locomotion system.

This in turn convinced me to develop and include the plethora of additional and cohesively bound together systems that would collectively become the Freedom Locomotion System.

From here, I plan on further innovating on fundamental VR interactions, in physics driven interactions of virtual objects, hand/body presence and representation, VR GUI development and other areas that might help to 'Bring the Virtual Closer to Reality.'
